National Organizations

Tolerance.org is the web project of the Southern Poverty Law Center and is dedicated to promoting understanding and acceptance. And it is a principal online destination for people interested in dismantling bigotry and creating, in hate's stead, communities that value diversity.

Free Press (www.freepress.net) is a national nonpartisan organization working to increase informed public participation in crucial media policy debates, and to generate policies that will produce a more competitive and public interest-oriented media system with a strong nonprofit and noncommercial sector.

A number of WISR students and faculty have suggested that a good source of opportunities for information and involvement in progressive social causes is MoveOn.Org (www.moveon.org). To quote from the MoveOn web site: "The MoveOn family of organizations brings real Americans back into the political process. With over 3.3 million members across America – from carpenters to stay-at-home moms to business leaders – we work together to realize the progressive vision of our country’s founders. MoveOn is a service – a way for busy but concerned citizens to find their political voice in a system dominated by big money and big media. The MoveOn family of organizations is made up of a couple of different pieces. MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, formerly known just as MoveOn.org, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, formerly known as MoveOn PAC, mobilizes people across the country to fight important battles in Congress and help elect candidates who reflect our values. Both organizations are entirely funded by individuals."

BoardNetUSA.org is a national, on-line service that is now open to Board Café subscribers [contact www.compasspoint.org to subscribe to the e-newsletter, Board Cafe]. [From e-newsletter, Board Cafe:] If you're looking for a new board to join, you can "shop" here for nonprofits in your area seeking board members. And if your board is looking for new members, you can "advertise" here for candidates: http://www4.compasspoint.org/p.asp?WebPage_ID=653
