WISR SEMINARS R AUGUST, 2005
I. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR
Interviewing & Participatory Action Research Thursday, August 11, 6:30-8:30pm
Marilyn Jackson, Ph.D., John Bilorusky, Ph.D., & Deborah Pruitt, Ph.D., WISR Faculty.
WISR Faculty Member, Dr. Marilyn Jackson, will discuss how she critiqued and wrote an analysis of action research methods in her recently completed WISR dissertation. All students will need to write up an analysis of action research used in their theses or other projects, so it is good to become aware of this step as well as to think ahead as to what kinds of action research to use. Since interviewing is often an important part of action research, each participant will be invited to pick a topic and interview one another during the course of the seminar. Participants may want to think of an interview topic beforehand. Also, we will discuss how action research includes the concept of participatory research, which involves people who are sources of information as active participants rather than passive subjects, as well as examples of some exciting new projects of various WISR faculty and students.

II. MARRIAGE FAMILY THERAPY (MFT) SEMINARS
These seminars, though designed for students pursuing an MFT license, are open to all students.
MFT Faculty request that nonstudents planning to attend MFT seminars let them know in advance.
Child & Teen Therapy III - Adolescent Challenges Saturday, August 13, 10:00am-3:00pm
Ronald Mah, MA, MFT, WISR Faculty. The first part of the seminar will complete child treatment issues, followed by the underlying cross-cultural and development principles of the therapeutic and life games, manipulations, and seductions practiced by adolescents (with themselves, with their peers, and with adults) will be conceptualized. This will allow clinicians to successfully meet the demands of the adolescent inter-relational “game.” Clinicians will be guided in how to validate the existential world of the teen by “playing” the game successfully (gaining respect and credibility versus losing the same), and then promoting therapeutic change leading to behavior, attitude, and value development. (Ronald Mah’s upcoming seminars: 9/24 - Child/Teen Therapy IV; 10/8-Child/Teen Therapy V; 11/5-Psychopathology I (Depression & Anxiety); 12/10; 1/14/06.)
Alcoholism and Substance Abuse III Saturday, August 20, 10:00am-1:00pm

Included in this seminar is looking at various cultural differences in the way substance abuse is looked at and treated. A paper is due within 1 month of completion of this course.
