Race and Class in America
Tuesday, December 12, 2006, 6:30-8:30 pm
Terry Day, PhD, visiting faculty & Kostas Bagakis, PhD, WISR Faculty. This seminar will be an investigation of the relationship of class to race in our society. It will include discussion and a short group exercise. After a discussion on methodology, Drs. Day and Bagakis will present a short history of the relationship of class to race in this country and show how it permeates every fabric of society – politically, economically, socially, culturally and psychologically.

Vera Labat, MPH, WISR Faculty. At this seminar we will watch the fourth and final part of Century of the Self. The November seminar led to discussion on Community Actions and Projects for2007 which may include focus groups on various topics, such as corporations, community residences, grassroots and mom and pop agencies. The group discussed probing questions by Vera Labat, “What times are we living in today? What are the prevailing psychological tactics or theories being used in society by major corporations and their marketing teams to continue their strategy for mass consumerism? and How do we deprogram?” Dr. Nazreen Kadir also spoke about the Dellums’ Task Force and the Sustainable Living Project in which she is involved with the City of Oakland. The Black Scholars forum intends to build on the experiences and knowledge-base of African Americans within WISR and the community at large. WISR learners of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are welcome to share and add their experiences, insights and questions for a rich dialogue aimed toward social change and justice that is well-informed and inclusive. Participants are invited to bring finger food snacks to share.

II. MARRIAGE FAMILY THERAPY (MFT) SEMINARS, although designed for students pursuing an MFT license, are open to all students; however nonstudents who plan to attend are requested to RSVP.
Domestic Violence, Part IV
Saturday, December 9,
10:00am-3:00pm
Ronald Mah, MA, MFT, WISR Faculty Couples therapy and relationships will be
examined through the lens of domestic violence. Indications and
counter-indications for individual work versus couples work with domestic
violence will be discussed. We will also discuss issues of attachment and
contributing diagnoses or other issues that contribute to domestic
violence. This is a Behavioral
Science Examiners required course of at least 15 hours for the MFT Master’s program.

The focus will be on helping participants learn more about action-research--a core requirement at WISR. We plan to have students who have not done action research interview other students, faculty, alumni, etc. who have. In preparation, we encourage you to write a several sentences about what you know about action-research, and what more you would like to learn. All WISR learners and faculty are expected to make every effort to attend! Alumni, Board and friends are welcome. Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean-up. Bring finger food snacks to share.
