WISR SEMINARS ~ NOVEMBER, 2006

I.INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR

Sustainable Living

Thursday, November 9, 2006

Nazreen Kadir, DBA, WISR Faculty.  Dr. Kadir, a management and technology transfer consultant, educator, and social activist, will lead a discussion on sustainable living with a social justice perspective.  Sustainability means different things to different people: from environmental conservation to self-sufficiency regarding food.  Participants should come prepared to discuss and share ideas from their own local communities, such as health clinics, community/self-help projects in housing, job training, etc., that are working for sustainability.  If you would like to join the seminar by telephone, contact WISR, at least 24 hours in advance, for the conference call call-in number.  This will be a new format combining a live seminar with a conference call, using a speakerphone at WISR. (There will be a seminar on Dec. 12th on Race and Class in America, 6:30-8:30pm, led by Terry Day, PhD and WISR Faculty Member, Kostas Bagakis, PhD.)

Black Scholars Forum þ

Thursday, November16, 6:30-8:30pm

üVera Labat, MPH, WISR Faculty. We will continue our critically oriented discussion on the film, The Century of the Self.  This film challenges how identity is constructed and the very idea of the individual self. It is important to our Black Scholar discussions in that we are socially mediated beings, and we need to understand the impact of the social identity and environment in which we live. The Black Scholars forum intends to build on the experiences and knowledge-base of African Americans within WISR and the community at large.  WISR learners of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are welcome to share and add their experiences, insights and questions for a rich dialogue aimed toward social change and justice that is well-informed and inclusive. Participants are invited to bring finger food snacks to share.

Culture, Mental Health & Social Change

Saturday, November 4, 10am-1:00pm

Marilyn Jackson, PhD, WISR Faculty.  Marilyn Jackson has researched and written about popular and cultural education in Denmark and its impact on Scandinavian culture and beyond.  For some, culture means something to be critiqued and changed.  For others it is important for their social identity and implies an ethnic heritage of shared stories, holidays and food. We will discuss how culture can be valuable for mental health, including self-esteem.  Participants are invited to bring something representative of their culture and to think of definitions for mental health and culture.  We will discuss examples of when cultures have conflicted in history and when they have changed.   We will take some time to do individual writing to relate this to the work each participant is doing.  (MFTs are encouraged to attend the Dec. 12thinterdisciplinary seminar on Race and Class in America, 6:30-8:30pm, led by Terry Day, PhD and WISR Faculty Member,  Kostas Bagakis,PhD.)
