The focus will be on helping participants learn more about action-research, a core requirement at WISR. We plan to have students who have not done action research interview other students, faculty, alumni, etc. who have. In preparation, we encourage you to write a several sentences about what you know about action-research, and what more you would like to learn. All WISR learners and faculty are expected to make every effort to attend!  Alumni, Board & friends are welcome. Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean-up.  Bring finger food snacks to share.

I. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR S

 

Poverty, Technology & Environmental Health:  Challenges & Lessons from Nigeria                 Thursday AND Friday, January 18 and 19, 6:30 to 8:30 pm

 

Mohammed Ibrahim, a WISR Ph.D. candidate from Nigeria in West Africa, will be visiting and leading two seminars (to be co-facilitated with WISR Faculty, John Bilorusky and Cynthia Lawrence). The seminars will be based on two papers he has worked on in the past year: Two Stroke Engine Technology: A Factor in Poverty Alleviation or a Menace to Health, Safety and Environment, A Case Study of An African Country: Nigeria and The Use of Natural Gas in Diesel Fuel Powered Electric Generating Plants In Nigeria.  Mohammed was a former Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Petroleum Resources and is a member of the Country’s think tank that fashioned and is implementing the current economic reforms program for Nigeria, “The National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS).” Mohammed has written and delivered papers in the fields of engineering, law and medicine.  Consult the special, one-page flyer about Mohammed and his seminar topics.  Also, by January 7th, the content of the flyer will be available on the Newsletter web page of WISR’s web site, www.wisr.edu.

II. MARRIAGE FAMILY THERAPY (MFT) SEMINARS, though designed for students pursuing an MFT license, are open to all students; however nonstudents who plan to attend are requested to RSVP.

 

Legal & Ethical Issues in Marriage & Family Therapy, Part I of III

This seminar will inform participants of the “what” of legal and ethical boundaries and violations.  It will also address the client and therapist “whys” of how a therapist comes to make errors anyway.  (Upcoming Seminar(s) w/Ronald Mah will be Part II, February 10, 10am-3pm;  Part III, tentative date: Saturday March 31, 2007, 10am-1pm.)

III. ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

WISR for the third year in a row, teams up with the Bay Area Black United Fund (BABUF) in conducting a participatory research/evaluation of BABUF’s 3rd biennial Summit on African American Health on January 11, 12, 13, 2007 at the Oakland Marriot City Center.
