WISR SEMINARS ~ FEBRUARY, 2007
I. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR
Black Scholars Forum þ Thursday, February 15, 2007, 6:30-8:30pm Vera Labat, MPH, WISR Faculty. At this seminar we will continue the discussion on strategic planning to create an infrastructure for Community Actions and Projects for 2007. Participants may also present papers on the film, Century of the Self, possibly including responses to the probing questions, What times are we living in today? What are the prevailing psychological tactics or theories being used in society by major corporations and their marketing teams to continue their strategy for mass consumerism? and How do we deprogram? We will continue discussions with Dr. Nazreen Kadir regarding how to have a participatory role with the Dellums Task Force and Sustainable Living Project which she is involved in with the City of Oakland and what that might entail. The Black Scholars forum intends to build on the experiences and knowledge-base of African Americans within WISR and the community at large. WISR learners of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are welcome to share and add their experiences, insights and questions for a rich dialogue aimed toward social change and justice that is well-formed and inclusive. Participants are invited to bring finger food snacks to share. ü
Selecting and Evaluating Action-Oriented Research Methods Wed., Feb. 21, 6:30-8:30pm
John Bilorusky, PhD, WISR Faculty. This will be a follow-up to the Action-Research discussion at the recent All-School Gathering. We will examine some of the many considerations involved in deciding which combination of research methods to use when one is planning a project. Emphasis will be given to research methods that are participatory, community-based, action-oriented, qualitative, experiential, engaging and/or exploratory in nature. This seminar will provide a foundation for subsequent seminars on “action-research” in the coming months. *** All WISR students are expected to make a strong effort to attend this seminar, and it will also count as one of the two required seminars for MFT students for the month of February.
