They will be critical issue oriented discussions and participants will critique the film, The Century of the Self, which challenges how identity is constructed and the very idea of the individual self. Dr. Kadir has been participating in meetings for The Declaration of Peace (DOP): A Comprehensive and Rapid Plan to end the occupation in Iraq by September 21st (http://declarationofpeace.org/), similar to the Pledge of Resistance, a strategy used a few decades ago to organize protests against U.S. aggression in Central America. Marilyn Jackson works with the Ecumenical Peace Institute, a faith based organization working nonviolently for peace and justice, which is also working on the DOP. Cynthia Lawrence, Ph.D., WISR Faculty. Using some video clips from Black & White, we will begin a discussion about cultural and ethnic barriers to fully hearing one another. This is especially important in a counseling setting when it is most crucial to hear through stereotypes, assumptions, generalizations, prejudices and more. Dr. Lawrence has taught Multicultural Education at UCSD and has been a Human Relations Commissioner for the County of San Diego. (Upcoming MFT seminars will be September 9th, led by WISR Vera Labat, MPH. 10 am-1 pm, and October 7th, Deborah Pruitt, PhD, 10am-1 pm.)
