WISR SEMINARS ~ APRIL, 2007

I. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS

Active Interviewing Seminar

Wednesday, April 11, 6:30-8:30 pm

Nazreen Kadir, DBA, WISR Faculty.

~ Active Interviewing is a primary data gathering method in qualitative inquiry. Various approaches can be taken when conducting active interviews ranging from an informal conversational approach to a standardized approach. In this seminar we will focus on the use of open-ended or in-depth interviewing as a way of constructing meaning through collaborative participation and engagement between interviewer and participant(s). This style of interviewing is consistent with the participatory action research approach emphasized at WISR.

~ Students currently employing interviews or who are thinking of this approach in their research are encouraged to discuss their projects and obtain feedback in this seminar workshop. We will discuss examples of open-ended interviews and one example, based on the instructor’s own field experience, in which an interview guide was combined with the open-ended format to interview elites. Challenges in elite interviewing, one application (instead of method) of active interviewing, will also be discussed.

Black Scholars Forum

Thursday, April 19, 2007, 6:30-8:30pm

Vera Labat, MPH, WISR Faculty.

~Building on our discussion with Dr. Linda Meyer we recognize that our Black and Brown youth are in a state of crisis: so many deaths by their own hands.  We must become proactive.  This forum will be a work session to develop plans of action to bring solutions for reducing the violence.  The Black Scholars forum intends to build on the experiences and knowledge-base of African Americans within WISR and the community at large.  WISR learners of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are welcome to share and add their experiences, insights and questions for a rich dialogue aimed toward social change and justice that is well-formed and inclusive. Participants are invited to bring finger food snacks to share.

Special Note to MFT students: 10 hours of seminars on sexuality are required for the license.  WISR only offers these seminars about once every two years, so if you haven't previously taken this series of seminars, you should make a special point to plan to attend.  The alternative is to take the required sexuality class somewhere else such as UC extension but you would have to pay their fees in addition.  WISR faculty member, Michael McGlathery, has decided that due to family health considerations he will have to withdraw from teaching at WISR for an indefinite period. (Parts 2 and 3 will be May 5, 10am to 1pm and June 2, 10am-3pm.
